Apollo Bay’s Karlijn Sas’ artwork Follow will feature as the 2021 Colac Otway Arts Trail’s signature image. The work was originally selected to promote last year’s trail, but the arts trail event like many artistic and creative events in 2020 was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The trail’s committee is gearing up for its 2021 event, scheduled for the 2-18 April across three weekends, and Follow is the image they’ll use for the event’s promotion. Sas, originally from the Netherlands, has called the Otways home since 2015 and describes Follow, an acrylic on canvas, as an abstract depiction of how she imagines the local landscape. She said she paints intuitively with no specific plan but was happy for people to make their own interpretation of her work. Sas is among several artists that will have their work on show in Apollo Bay on 2-4 April as part of the first of three Colac Otway Arts Trail weekends in April. “There is a really inspirational arts community in the region locally, there is such a diversity in artists, artistic medium and the scale of works. Some artists have works in the NGV, some are commercial artists, while some are developing their artistic style. Its inspiring to see people come together for the event,” she said. Colac Otway Shire mayor Kate Hanson launched the arts trail at the Colac Makers Space on Friday. This year’s trail has attracted more than 150 local artists and creatives and includes nine local artist studios and five galleries opening, more than 100 artists’ work at the Apollo Bay Art Show, ten group venues, and more than 25 artists at the Colac art expo and nine outdoor displays involving community and local schools. Colac Otway Arts Trail is on from 2-18 April 2021. Dates and locations: 2-4 April 2021 at Apollo Bay,10-11 April 2021 at Colac and Birregurra, 17-18 April 2021 at Gellibrand Lavers Hill.
